As many American women celebrated International Women’s day by ditching work to march in the streets as protest to the oppression of women…. in America; I had to pause for a moment to reflect on what feminism is and what it has become.
According to Dictionary.com feminism is defined as:
- the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men.
- (sometimes initial capital letter) an organized movement for the attainment of such rights for women.
As I watch the media debate the issue of whether or not right are being denied to women in America, which if I wanted to use the argument of elitism that the liberal left uses indiscriminately I would highlight these American women as a classic example of the Elitism they protest. It is a fact that the most impoverished american household is considered to be included in the 1% of wealthiest, privileged, and free world wide. While the women of America do have equal pay, which has even been corroborated by the Obama Administration, equal opportunity to higher earnings, and the right to choose not to have children (hello birth control is at the local drug store, and could we please talk about abstinence?)… there are women in the world who are truly oppressed. Women are seen as less than second class citizens under Sheria law (for more links on what Sharia is and its oppressive effects on women click here), and there are women in slavery all over the world today who are sexually abused or used for manual labor… Where was the protesters for them?
I am not trying to be a witch with a capital B to the women out marching, for the most part I think there hearts are in the right place and they do believe they are standing for something that is important. What, unfortunately, has happened is that the classic feminism that got us the right to vote and a voice in the world beyond our homes (BTW this is in no way a slight against stay-at-home moms, I was raised by one who is my hero!) as morphed into a man hating embittered movement that, at least in this past march, has been run by known terrorists and funded by George Soros. The biggest problem we have here is not that women feel the need to protest, but that women have lost touch with where true femininity and feminism comes from; God.
Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for[e] him.” Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed[f] every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam[g] there was not found a helper fit for him. So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made[h] into a woman and brought her to the man. Then the man said,
“This at last is bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman,
because she was taken out of Man.”[i]
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. Genesis 2:18-25
Now many take this bible verse as demeaning to women, but in reality it shows the great love God has for his feminine creations, for not only are we made from Gods image but we are also apart of man. This positioning proves that both men and women hold equality in the eyes of God. We were created to be a helpmate to our male counterparts; our strengths cover their weaknesses and their strengths cover ours. This is not only for personal relationships but also in our work lives, friendships, and daily interactions. We women balance the world and are made in the image of God, if that isn’t empowering what is?
Now when the first couple was cast out of Eden, believe me both Eve AND ADAM screwed up there but that is for another post, the relationship that God originally created was corrupted. This corruption can be seen in todays feminism as women try to demean and belittle the worth of men to secure their own worth in the secular world. Instead of seeking the mazing examples of empowered women through the Bible, we instead seek the glorified versions of womanhood in our celebrity idols. Taking their word as absolute truth never taking into consideration that they are also human, they are also prone to mistakes, misinformation, and bias that skews their views of the world… which we then take hold of and make it into our own impression of the world.
To my dear sisters who read this article, I’m not trying to admonish you but awaken you to just how powerless you are with out the full knowledge of what God has truly created you to be, to open your eyes to what true oppression is in this world, and to over come the guilt that breeds bitterness over how blessed you are in the privilege of being an American. Look for true empowerment, not in your peers, but in the eyes of God.
Like the image above illustrates, from Proverbs Mama, there is more power for women found in the love and grace of God than we could find anywhere upon this earth.
