1 Corinthians 13:4-7 New International Version (NIV)
4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
I think at some point in our lives we have all heard the verse above. It is written on decorative signs, its said at weddings, and we Christians love to spew it out on Facebook statuses and blog posts… but do we really know what it means?
The Bible has been translated in many languages until our present time english version. In many cases a lot of the words have lost their true meaning for there is no english word that represents the Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, or even Old English definition.
In this case I would like to take you back to the Greek translation of the word Love, which most Bibles place in the verse above ( Some also say Charity).
The Greek word for Love is agape.
Agape is a selfless, sacrificial, and unconditional love. Basically the highest form of love, the kind of unconditional love that Jesus Christ gave when he selflessly sacrificed himself for our sins. He knew most of us world deny this gift, He knew that we were unworthy sin ridden, filthy souls, and He knew we would turn our back on Him… yet still, with your name on His heart and mind, He stepped up and died for you, and me, anyways.
No one is perfect, and by no means will we as sinners ever live up to Jesus’s perfect and sinless example, but in the verse of 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7 we can find some guide lines on how we are supposed to act as christians here on our earthly plane.
It is here I am starting the Agape Challenge! This is something that we must incorporate into our lives every day. Some where that you will see it on a daily basis write down the verse above but this time subtract the word Love and fill in your own name. Are you patient with that annoying coworker? Are you kind to the harried grocery store clerk? Do you get angry easily when you are caught behind a slow driver?
To change our world we must first look at ourselves. This challenge is only the first step, and one I personally believe I will fail more times then I succeed, but I am willing to try.
KE Dean is she…
does not envy,
does not boast,
is not proud.
does not dishonor others,
is not self-seeking,
is not easily angered,
keeps no record of wrongs.
Does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
…. I’m trying to be, will you try with me?
